Academic Staff Member – Assistant Professor with a Focus on Microbiology

Research field: microbiology, study of harmful microorganisms for plants, study of beneficial microorganisms for plants, basic techniques for biotechnology applications (PCR, sequencing, cultivation of microorganisms, etc.)

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.

The Mendeleum Research Institute focuses on research in the field of plant biotechnology, where the principles of molecular genetics are used in breeding and health monitoring of horticultural crops or tissue culture for in vitro elimination of viral diseases.

What will be your job role?

  • teaching and leading practical sessions in microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology
  • supervising students‘ final theses (bachelor, diploma, dissertation)
  • conducting laboratory experiments, analysing data and publishing results in scientific journals
  • research activities in the field of microbiology and biotechnology
  • preparation of research proposals, grant applications and subsequent project management, including financial support
  • cooperation with industrial partners and academic institutions
  • publication and presentation of results at conferences

What are our requirements?

  • a Ph.D. degree in horticulture and microbiology
  • active knowledge of Czech and English
  • thorough knowledge of microbial processes, especially interactions between microorganisms and plants
  • practical experience with molecular methods such as PCR, DNA sequencing and other techniques aimed at the detection and analysis of microorganisms
  • experience in isolation and cultivation of micro-organisms, including working with different growth media and conditions
  • experience in laboratory work, procedures for handling microorganisms, and adherence to safety standards
  • leading research projects from preparing grant applications to managing finances and coordinating the team
  • ability to write scientific papers and present results at professional conferences
  • leading interdisciplinary teams and mentoring junior colleagues and students

Required research experience:

  • authorship or co-authorship of at least 20 articles listed in the Wos database and/or H index with a value of at least 8

Job status: 0,2 (8 hours per week)

Expected start: December 2024

Employment contract: fixed term for 3 years with the possibility of extension to 5 years
