Academic Staff Member – Assistant Professor with a Focus on Phytochemistry and Phytotaxonomy

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.

The Department of Forest Botany, Dendrology and Geobiocenology at Mendel University in Brno is a unique department in the Czech Republic that has long been dedicated to geobiocenological research and its applications in forestry, nature and landscape conservation, spatial planning and environmental protection. We are now looking for a new colleague to join our small team specialising in phytochemistry and phytotaxonomy. We are mainly interested in the study of plant secondary metabolites, their bioactivity, relevance to humans and plant responses to environmental stress factors.

What will you do?

  • conducting lectures and tutorials mainly in the field of botany and phytochemistry of useful plants (Useful plants of the tropics and subtropics, Botany, General botany, Phytochemistry)
  • guarantee of courses in the field
  • supervision of final student theses
  • research and project activities in the field of phytochemistry
  • publication of research results in scientific journals
  • active participation in conferences and seminars

What are our requirements?

  • Master’s degree in forestry, tropical forestry, agroforestry, etc., scientific qualification Ph.D. in forestry phytology or similar
  • active knowledge of Czech and English language (teaching in both Czech and English)
  • proven experience in teaching in Czech and English
  • experience in project management
  • experience in project implementation in the tropics and subtropics
  • ability to develop and innovate research processes
  • experience in presenting research results and publishing them in leading impacted journals

Required research experience:

  • initial research experience (PhD)
  • experience working in a chemistry laboratory
  • experience in gas or liquid chromatography
  • experience in the identification of chemical compounds in plant secondary metabolites

What else do we appreciate?

  • ability to work in a team and independently and to follow through on assignments
  • experience in managing a small team
  • experience with expeditions to tropical countries
  • driving licence group B, active driver

Job status: 1,0 (40 hours per week)

Expected start: April 2025

Employment contract: fixed term for 3 years
