Academic Staff Member – Associate Professor for the Department of Area Studies, Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies

The applicant should have a proven academic interest in one or more of the following areas: International Relations and/or Development Studies. Preferably accompanied by a specific engagement in a region or group of countries within the Middle East and/or Africa.

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.

The Department of Area Studies focuses on the political pillar of the development of the various world regions. Our research interests include Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, China, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the European Union. Therefore, the academic staff are encouraged and supported to regularly visit those regions as visiting professors or to conduct their field research over there. Our students also come from all different parts of the world. The knowledge we have acquired is passed on to students in courses specialising in these regions, as well as in theoretical courses that improve the students’ knowledge of political science and development. The contemporary world requires an understanding of it, and this is what we try to convey to our students.

 

What will be your job role?

  • teaching the core courses pertaining to international relations and/or development studies at the undergraduate and graduate level as well as teaching option courses with research themes to one’s liking
  • supervising and guidance to undergraduate students, graduate and doctoral students, followed by their examining
  • conducting independent and/or collaborative research in the relevant field
  • preparing grant applications and coordinating scientific research projects, including team leadership
  • actively participating in the academic and research activities of the department and faculty

What are our requirements?

  • A PhD and the Czech Associate Professorship degree (docent/docentka), or a respective academic background meeting the criteria for the latter, in international relations or in a closely related field. Ideally with a research focus on the Middle East and/or Africa (applicants with only a PhD degree will be considered in the case of academic excellence)
  • ability and willingness to teach in Czech and English, publish in English
  • enthusiasm for teaching and inspiring students from diverse backgrounds and helping them reach their full potential
  • a recognised portfolio of research and publications in the field
  • ability to obtain external funding for research, including successful grant applications and research project management
  • teamwork, organisational, and communication skills

Job status: 1,0 (40 hours per week)

Expected start: March 2025 or by agreement

Employment contract: for a fixed period 1 year with the possibility of extension
