Academic Staff Member – Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Natural Resources, Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies

Research field: environmental protection, ecosystem services, sustainable use of natural resources, ecology

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.

We comprehensively address the environmental pillar of sustainable development at strategic, conceptual and regional levels. We undertake scientific, pedagogical and operational activities in these areas. In addition to the Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies, we are also active in other organisational parts of Mendel University. We intersperse theoretical teaching with practical demonstrations, field trips and practicals. We also involve outside workers from governmental and non-governmental institutions, business corporations and the non-profit sector. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to lead a team of academic staff, develop the research activities of the Department and contribute to the strategic goals of the Faculty.

What will be your job role?

  • planning, organisation and supervision of all aspects of the Department’s activities
  • managing the Department’s budget and resources
  • pedagogical and scientific research activities in the field according to the thematic focus of the Department
  • ensuring high quality teaching and mentoring of students
  • managing and motivating the academic and research staff and employees of the Department, and their regular appraisal
  • supporting research activities and obtaining grants for the Department
  • cooperation with other departments and faculty management

What are our requirements?

  • a university degree at Ph.D. level in a field of study focused on the Department’s activities (associate professor/professor rank is an advantage)
  • excellent knowledge of Czech and English, ability to teach and publish in both languages
  • experience in managing an institute/department
  • experience in budget management and efficient use of resources
  • ability to understand labour law and the economic rules governing the management of a public university
  • ability to provide quality teaching and to support the professional development of the team
  • an active approach to developing cooperation with external partners and involving students in practice
  • motivation for further personal development and qualification growth
  • representation of the Department at national and international level
  • demonstrable research activities according to the thematic focus of the department

Required research experience:

  • initiate and coordinate research projects and grant applications
  • publish research results in reputable scientific journals

Job status: 1,0 (40 hours per week)

Expected start: December 2024

Employment contract: fixed term for 4 years
