Academic Staff Member – Head of the Department of Regional Development, Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies

Research field: regional development, regional policy, strategic planning and management

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.

The team at the Department of Regional Development is diverse; we are social geographers, economists, GISers and regionalists. Therefore, our teaching and research focus is also broad, ranging from regional policy, strategic planning, public administration to specific local development tools. Thus, we address, among others, topics such as: participation of actors in territorial development, community development (especially the activities of local action groups), smart cities and regions, brownfields, municipal cooperation, municipal amenities or visibility assessment in cities and landscapes. We use various quantitative and qualitative research methods and subsequently apply a variety of tools to process and visualize (not only) spatial data. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to lead a team of academics, develop the research activities of the institute and contribute to the strategic goals of the faculty.

What will be your job role?

  • planning, organisation and supervision of all aspects of the Department’s activities
  • managing the Department’s budget and resources
  • pedagogical and scientific research activities in the field according to the thematic focus of the Department
  • ensuring high quality teaching and mentoring of students
  • managing and motivating the academic and research staff and employees of the Department, and their regular appraisal
  • supporting research activities and obtaining grants for the Department
  • cooperation with other departments and faculty management

What are our requirements?

  • a university degree at Ph.D. level in a field of study focused on the Department’s activities (associate professor/professor rank is an advantage)
  • excellent knowledge of Czech and English, ability to teach and publish in both languages
  • experience in managing an institute/department
  • experience in budget management and efficient use of resources
  • ability to understand labour law and the economic rules governing the management of a public university
  • ability to provide quality teaching and to support the professional development of the team
  • an active approach to developing cooperation with external partners and involving students in practice
  • motivation for further personal development and qualification growth
  • representation of the Department at national and international level
  • demonstrable research activities according to the thematic focus of the department

Required research experience:

  • initiate and coordinate research projects and grant applications
  • publish research results in reputable scientific journals

Expected start: December 2024
