The graduate is prepared to independent and team scientific research and pedagogical work. He/she has a broad outlook in geography, in the application of theoretical and methodological approaches of natural and social sciences to understand socio-spatial changes in designing integrative solutions to complex problems in the Czech and international context. Can apply integrative approaches developed in geography and related fields in designing problem-oriented interdisciplinary solutions basic and applied research. Using field and qualitative methods research, historical sources and modern geoinformatics technologies, the student will be able to reconstruct, understand and interpret the developments, processes and mechanisms leading to environmental changes, the driving forces behind changes in the landscape and regions of different geographical scales, in different periods, environmental and social contexts; understand the nature of natural and social risks; be able to draw synthesising conclusions about landscape change and the evolution of interactions society-nature. Is prepared to work in academic, decimation and commercial and in the non-profit sector. The purpose of the degree programme is to enable graduates of the undergraduate programme in the follow-up Master’s degree programme. Landscape and Society and in other geographical and related disciplines to develop holistic and integrative approaches to research on long-term landscape change, to understand the changing interrelationship between society and nature and to apply apply the skills acquired in complex landscape management and conservation and in local and regional development.

Profile of the graduate
Graduates are prepared for research and teaching, with a broad outlook in geography, capable of addressing complex issues. They use field methods and modern technologies to understand landscape and societal changes. They are ready for work in academic and commercial sectors, aiming to develop holistic approaches to landscape research and understanding the relationship between society and nature.
Application submission
The application is submitted electronically through the Charles University study information system. The completed application must be submitted electronically in the study information system no later than on 30. 4. 2025 for study programmes starting in the winter semester (October) and no later than on 15. 12. 2025 for study programmes starting in the summer semester (April).
The admission fee is 100 EUR and it is paid for each submitted application.
Entrance exam
The regular date of entrance exam for all doctoral programmes starting in the winter semester (October) is 9. – 20. 6. 2025, an alternative date is 23. – 27. 6. 2025.
The regular date of entrance exam for all doctoral programmes starting in the summer semester (April) is 4. – 5. 2. 2026, an alternative date is 11. – 12. 2. 2026.
The request for an alternative day is submitted and approved via the electronic information system.
The form of the entrance exam is an oral interview, which mainly concerns the issues of the planned dissertation and the candidate’s knowledge within the field of expertise of the given study programme.
