Overview

The dean of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, invites applications for job vacancy with a deadline for applications October 31, 2024

Contribution to the project “Role Ethics in Ancient and Contemporary Philosophy” (Primus funding scheme of Charles University). The project aims to explore the notion of social “role” (familial, professional or political) as 1) a basis for a moral theory distinct from virtue-ethics and deontology; 2) a framework for a new eudaemonist account that envisages the good human life in terms of a successful performance of different social roles one inhabits. The position is fixed-term with a three-month probationary period. The time limit of 8 years after obtaining the Ph.D. may not be exceeded for the duration of the project. The Post-Doc will develop and pursue, in their area of specialisation, a research agenda that is relevant to the project. This can include a purely historical research in Greek, Roman or Chinese role-ethics; a comparative research between Graeco-Roman and Chinese tradition; interventions into the contemporary debates in normative ethics; or a combination of historical and systematic approach. It is expected that the Post-Doc will publish their research in highly-ranked journals or with prestigious publishers in their area of specialisation, roughly at the rate of 1-2 articles per year. We also expect regular participation in joint activities of the research team, such as organisation of an international conference or monthly research colloquia. In principle, the postholder should be based in Prague for the duration of the project. The post does not include administrative or teaching duties, but the postholder will have opportunity to offer courses on subjects in the thematic vicinity of the project (in Czech or English) if that meaningfully advances their career aspirations. Expected salary/job rank: 62 000 CZK (ca 2 450 EUR) per month (brutto), plus social security contributions of the employer. This is the salary for the first year of the project. In the following years, it may be higher or lower by up to 10%, depending on the budgetary situation. Job class VP2.
