Přehled

We offer a postdoctoral position to work on the topic of electron heating in the shock transition region, both in laser and astrophysical plasmas.

The turbulence that mediates shock formation can energise electrons from the thermal pool up to the minimal energy required to start the Fermi I acceleration mechanism. Although several mechanisms have been proposed for this injection problem, it remains unsolved due to the lack of reliable tests.

What will you do

We want to quantify the efficiency of different plasma instabilities in heating thermal electrons through kinetic and kinetic+MHD numerical studies in non-relativistic shocks. In a second step, we want to study how the spectrum of non-thermal electrons (accelerated by diffusing back and forth the shock, i.e., Fermi I) memorises the electron heating mechanism. Our results will be tested by radio observations of protostellar jets in the low-frequency regime (radio wavelengths) and by properly scaled laser-plasma experiments.

What we expect

  • We are looking for candidates with skills in PIC simulations and in-depth knowledge of plasma instabilities.
  • The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate independent thinking.
  • We expect good communication skills.
