Biomedical and biotechnological applications of plant derived exosomes

Location: Centre for Nanomaterials and Biotechnology (CENAB), Faculty of Science, University of J. Evangelista Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem,  Pasteurova 3632/15, 400 96 Ústí nad Labem

Starting date: September to November 2024

Application deadline: September 30, 2024

The selected candidate will participate in projects related to the development of novel biomedical and biotechnological applications of plant-derived exosomes. The project focuses on the isolation of plant exosomes from whole plants, calluses, and suspension cell cultures of various model and herbal plants. The postdoctoral candidate will collaborate with project partners from both the academic and private sectors to develop novel applications in human and veterinary medicine (such as immunomodulators, vaccines, antimicrobial formulations, wound healing, drug delivery) and/or cosmetic products.

In addition to basic research, the ongoing projects and collaborations are strongly application-oriented, with the potential for future commercialization. Methodologically, the project involves the cultivation of plant tissue cultures, the isolation of exosomes using both conventional (ultracentrifugation) and production-capable methods (TFF), and scaling up exosome production from suspension cell culture in bioreactors. Exosomes will be thoroughly characterized using biophysical (NTA, DLS), microscopic (EM, confocal microscopy), molecular biology (WB, flow cytometry, miRNA sequencing, proteomic analysis) and analytical methods (HPLC-MS/MS). Plant exosomes will then be surface-decorated or encapsulated with biologically active compounds (recombinant enzymes, antigens, plasmids) and tested on target applications in vitro (animal cell cultures, blood cells of healthy donors, bacterial biofilms) and in vivo animal models (mouse, bee).

CENAB offers a modern, competitive research infrastructure and working conditions. The position is funded until December 2026, with potencial extension until December 2028.

The postdoctoral candidate must posses a PhD in experimental botany, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related relevant field. Previous experience with explant cell cultures, suspension cell bioreactors, and/or the aforementioned experimental techniques is highly valued. Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required.
