Non-academic Staff Member – Project Researcher for the Department of Environmentalistics and Natural Resources

Research field: the aim of the research is to determine the effect of deciduous trees in the stand mixtures on the reduced attractiveness of Norway spruce (Picea abies) in natural positions for bark beetles. The study will be conducted at three levels that build on each other and will confirm the hypotheses by both laboratory and field experiments: a) organism level; b) forest stand level; c) landscape level (modelling the representation, age and extent of broadleaves in stand mixtures and bark beetle population densities on the level of actual bark beetle harvests). Based on the repellent properties of broadleaved trees for spruce-bound bark beetles, the optimal percentage of spruce in mixed forests that can be protected by volatiles of non-host trees will be determined, and a methodology for new target tree compositions will be developed
