JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Biology Centre, Czech Academy of Sciences (BCAS), Institute of Parasitology (https://www.paru.cas.cz/en/), is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our team. The successful candidate will contribute to the EURCAW-Aqua project, an EU Reference Centre for the Welfare of Aquatic Animals. This project aims to enhance the welfare of farmed marine, freshwater fish species, and cephalopods through scientific research, the development of welfare indicators, and the dissemination of knowledge and best practices.

Key responsibilities:

  • Research and development:
    – Conduct research on aquatic animals’ welfare, particularly focusing on the welfare of common carp, as well as other species as designated by the project Work Program.
    – Develop and validate welfare indicators and scoring systems for aquatic animals in aquaculture settings.
    – Engage in the review of existing literature and welfare legislation at the EU level, and data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support the development of welfare standards.
  • Collaboration and communication:
    – Work closely with other project partners to ensure the successful delivery of project objectives addressing the needs of the national competent authority.
    – Participate in meetings, workshops, and conferences to present outputs and reports that contribute to the project’s progress.
    – Undertake writing of the reports and other deliverables as specified in the Work Program.
  • Outreach and training:
    – Contribute to the development of training materials and resources for national competent authority.
    – Deliver training sessions and workshops to disseminate best practices in aquatic animal welfare.

    Qualifications and Skills:
  • Degree in Veterinary Sciences (preferred), Aquaculture, Biology, or a related field.
  • Background in fish physiology, behaviour, and welfare is welcomed.
  • Experience with literature review, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific writing.
  • Proficiency in English (both written and oral).

    Preferred Experience:
  • Familiarity with the European Union’s regulations and standards related to aquaculture.
  • Knowledge of basic statistical methods and software used in aquaculture research.
  • In-field veterinary experience related to aquaculture.

    Employment details:
  • Job duration: Fixed-term contract from the start date until the completion of the project in 2027, with potential for extension based on performance and funding. The probation period will be three months.
  • Start date: We aim for the candidate to start in Autumn 2024.
  • Salary: The gross salary is expected to be 40,000 – 55,000 CZK per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
