Academic Scientific Research Position – Researcher – PhD student for the Department of Environmental Science and Natural Resources

We are a modern university, teaching and researching agriculture, forestry, economic and technical disciplines in regional and international contexts. Since 2018, we have been the holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award for improving employee care, awarded to us as the first Czech university by the European Commission.
This is a position within the project “ClimateAdaptForest”, which is co-financed by the European Union within the Interreg Slovakia-Czech Republic Programme.
The aim of the project is to identify and evaluate the impacts of climate change on the functioning of forests, including their accumulation capacity, and to develop adaptation measures for forest managers in the Slovak-Czech border region. The project will establish a transboundary forest monitoring system, including an early response system to climate change risks. The system will be implemented in border forests along the Slovak-Czech border on both sides. Project activities:1. Development of a methodology for monitoring and measurement of key indicators for forest management and establishment, calibration and testing of a network of measuring stations 2. Deployment of 10 measuring stations in different types of forests in SK and CZ border region4. SK-CZ Foresting 2050+ Strategy The system is innovative in its complex system approach and complementary (cross-border) cooperation of IT/electrical and ENVI experts. It is an adaptation of IoT technology – multi-sensor modular platform for monitoring environmental parameters for forestry applications.
What will you do?
- cooperation on calibration of climate stations in the field
- drone imaging of selected sites and subsequent analysis of the data
- presentation of climate change adaptation measures in forests in the affected municipalities
- participation in the organisation of workshops on resilience of municipalities for stakeholders
- coordination of student research on social awareness on community resilience and climate change
What are our requirements?
- completed master’s degree and ongoing doctoral studies in the field
- advanced knowledge of Czech/Slovak language
- an overview of climate change issues
- experience with the use of drones for data collection in the field
- knowledge of software for spatial data capture and processing
- organizational and communication skills – ability to cooperate with stakeholders in Slovak and Czech
Required research experience: experience in field survey data collection and processing

Job status: 0,5 – 20 hours per week (0,2 funded by the Interreg project + 0,3 funded by the Department)
Expected start: January 2025
Employment contract: fixed term for 3 years
