Faculty of Science MU, a holder of the HR Excellence in Research Award by the European Commission, is a research-oriented faculty, offering university education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degree programs) closely linked to both primary and applied research and high school teaching of the following sciences: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth sciences. We are the most productive scientific unit of the Masaryk University, generating around 40 % of MU research results.

Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science MU traditionally covers the whole spectrum of geographical disciplines, from physical geography, social geography, regional development to cartography, geoinformatics, and remote sensing. The primary research focus of the institute is on polar research (we operate the Johan Gregor Mendel Antarctic Research Station), historical climatology, urban rhythms and human population mobility, issues of cooperation between cross-border regions, geoinformation support for crisis management, virtual geographical environments (VGE), and environmental informatics related to precision agriculture. Research projects are carried out within the framework of basic and applied research in cooperation with many national (Charles University, UPOL, VŠB, institutes of the Academy of Sciences) and international departments. The department offers education in bachelor’s and master’s programs, including teaching geography in combination with other subjects (mathematics, biology, English, etc.). The English master’s programme in Geography of Global Environmental Change in English is also newly offered starting in the 2023 fall semester.

Job Description

Key Duties:

  • Participation in teaching in bachelor, master and doctoral studies, including independent lecture and tutorial supervision
  • Preparation of related teaching and study materials
  • Supervision and consultation of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral theses
  • Active participation in the preparation and implementation of field exercises
  • Publishing activities in domestic and international professional journals
  • Independent scientific and research activities; participation in the preparation and solution of scientific research projects
  • Popularisation of science and presentation of outputs to the professional and wider public
  • Participation in academic and organisational activities of the institute
  • Continuous professional self-education and monitoring of developments in the field

Skills and Qualifications

The applicant must have:

  • Ph.D. degree in social or economic geography or a related research field
  • Professional orientation in economic and regional geography, spatial planning and rural/urban studies
  • Ability to formulate and teach new interdisciplinary topics relevant to the domain of social geography; especially in the field of spatial data analysis and rural or agricultural geography
  • Willingness to teach regional geography of selected continents
  • Proven publication record
  • Teaching experience at the university level is an advantage
  • Independence, responsibility and ability to work as a team
  • Aptitude for supervising students and active scientific work
